To maintain the security of sensitive data as it travels over the Internet to or from the browser, Web applications often rely on Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). The secure Webpages and processes that transmit sensitive data utilize HTTP over SSL (HTTPS) rather than the usual HTTP. Integrating SSL into a Web application should prove seamless and simple to implement as well as maintain. In this article, Steve Ditlinger explores typical SSL implementations. He develops an SSL solution using the J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) servlet redirect mechanism to protect sensitive data transmission. He also develops an overall solution combining JavaServer Pages (JSP) custom tags and an application-specific servlet base class. Imagine the advantages of being able to dynamically access a database from client-side JavaScript. You could dynamically query a database from JavaScript for client-side field validation, or dynamically populate a drop-down select list, to name just a few possibilities. In fact, you can do this, with the help of an applet-servlet pair (assuming you can constrain your users to compatible browsers, i.e., IE and Netscape.) Le but de ce tutoriel est de vous permettre de tester vos servlets ou pages JSP avec la dernière version de Tomcat. Seulement, la documentation présente actuellement sur le web porte surtout sur les versions précédentes de Tomcat, et la marche à suivre pour une installation correcte et rapide, bien que proche, n'est pas tout à fait la même (changement de répertoire notamment).
Notons que l'installation du Java 2 SDK est elle aussi nécessaire afin de compiler nos servlets.

Nous allons nous intéresser dans cet article à l'écriture de servlets Java simples. La première étape est bien sûr de disposer d'un serveur web permettant d'exécuter de tels servlets.
